1. How Calculations Work
Every emission calculation in BARGO’s engine follows the same auditable formula mandated by the GHG Protocol Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard:
CO₂e (kg) = Activity Data × Emission Factor × Multipliers
Activity Data = the operational quantity (kWh, km, tonnes, litres, £/$)
Emission Factor = official conversion factor from government source
Multipliers = context-specific adjustments (e.g., Radiative Forcing for flights)
Every calculation is stored as an immutable audit record containing:
- Inputs — the exact operational data submitted (distance, weight, fuel type, etc.)
- Factor snapshot — full copy of the emission factor used, including its source, value, UOM, and all level metadata
- Factor set ID — which methodology version was active (e.g.,
desnz-2025-v1.0) - Formula note — human-readable calculation breakdown
- Per-gas breakdown — CO₂, CH₄, and N₂O components (ESRS E1-6 AR 39(c))
- Timestamp — when the calculation was performed
2. Official Factor Sources
All emission factors are imported directly from official government publications. No factors are invented, estimated, or derived — every value can be traced back to its source document.

3. Calculation Categories & Formulas
Coverage spans GHG Protocol Scope 1, 2, and 3 categories 1–15 (18 calculation paths in total). Each endpoint is tested against hand-verified values from the official source documents.

4. Factor Lookup Engine
The calculation engine resolves emission factors using a cascading lookup that tries progressively broader matches:
- Exact match — scope + level_1 + level_2 + level_3 + level_4 + UOM + column_text
- Drop column_text — scope + level_1 + level_2 + level_3 + level_4 + UOM
- Drop level_4 — scope + level_1 + level_2 + level_3 + UOM
- Drop level_3 — scope + level_1 + level_2 + UOM
- Cross-level — try level_2 value as level_3 (handles DESNZ 4-tier hierarchy)
5. Automated Verification Results
We maintain two automated verification suites that run against the live API:
5.1 Golden Calculation Tests (24/24 Pass)
Each test sends a known input to the API and verifies the result against a hand-calculated expected value. Every factor value is cross-referenced with the official source file.

6. Audit Trail Architecture
Every calculation creates an immutable audit record. This record cannot be modified or deleted — it serves as the permanent audit trail an external auditor can replay independently. Each record persists:
- A unique identifier for the calculation
- The factor set version active at calculation time (e.g., DESNZ 2025 v1.0)
- An immutable snapshot of the exact factor value used (full copy with source, value, UOM, level metadata)
- The original user inputs as submitted
- The calculated CO₂e result in kg
- Per-gas breakdown (CO₂, CH₄, N₂O — required for ESRS E1-6 AR 39(c))
- A human-readable formula breakdown
- Calculation timestamp
7. Independent Verification
Qualified auditors can re-run the verification suites against the live system independently. The verification methodology — golden calculation tests, bulk factor audits, cross-method differential checks — is documented and available on request as part of an engagement evidence pack.
